Cash on Delivery in Ghana: The Risk Carriers Carry Every Day

Cash on delivery is the most common payment method for parcels in Ghana — and also the riskiest. Carriers bear the cost when receivers don't show up. Digital platforms like ParcelGH are introducing new ways to manage COD risk while keeping the option available for customers who need it.

Why COD is so popular

Many receivers in Ghana — especially older family members or people in smaller towns — don't use Mobile Money. They prefer to pay cash when they collect. For senders, COD offers peace of mind: the receiver only pays when the parcel actually arrives.

For carriers, however, COD creates a serious operational headache.

The problem: uncollected parcels

When a receiver doesn't show up to collect a COD parcel, the carrier is left holding stock they can't release without payment. The parcel takes up space at the terminal. Staff spend time following up by phone. And if the sender wants the parcel returned, the carrier bears the return cost.

Across a network processing hundreds of parcels a day, the cost of uncollected COD parcels adds up quickly.

How digital platforms are helping

ParcelGH addresses this in two ways. First, SMS notifications are sent automatically when a parcel arrives — so receivers know immediately and can plan their collection. Second, the platform records whether a COD parcel has been collected and paid, giving carriers a clear reconciliation trail.

In the future, digital platforms could introduce COD deposits — requiring receivers to pay a small amount upfront to confirm intent — as an additional risk-reduction tool.

What carriers can do today

The most effective immediate step is to require sender phone numbers and receiver phone numbers at booking, and to use automated SMS to confirm arrival. This alone significantly reduces the "I didn't know it had arrived" excuse.

ParcelGH handles all of this automatically for every booking on the platform.
